When I travel, I’m always fascinated by how people live in their environments. People-watching abroad often shows me that my assumptions about other cultures are often wrong until I experience them firsthand. Immersing myself in different cultures has taught me to find commonalities, respect differences, and identify what truly matters to me.
During my recent trip to the Congo, the overwhelming sense of community left a lasting impression. From dawn until late at night, the streets were alive with people gathering, businesses thriving, and a sense of connection that was palpable. It felt like a scene from a movie—music, laughter, family gatherings, and everyone out enjoying life together.
Returning home to the U.S., I noticed a stark contrast—people cooped up indoors, neighbors barely interacting, and a general sense of disconnection. This isolation needs to change. How can we create a stronger sense of community here? What would it look like if we all lived in joy and love, and our communities reflected that?
Building community has always been my goal. Whether through adorning women with waist beads, hosting wellness events, mentoring young girls, or building international connections, my focus remains the same: fostering a sense of togetherness.
How can you contribute to building the community you want to be a part of? Here are some ideas:
- Be your authentic self. There’s nothing like being loved for who you are.
- Take the initiative to bless others. Acts of kindness not only feel good but also attract positive energy.
- Join a community class or program. Engage with others and learn new skills while building connections.
- Participate in community service. Meet like-minded individuals who share your values.
- Mentor youth. Share your life experiences and wisdom with those who are navigating their own paths.
- Teach a skill. Offer a free class to share your knowledge with others—whether it’s a DIY project or your favorite recipe.
- Build connections when you travel. Share your business cards and stay in touch with those you meet along the way.
Let’s work together to create the community we want to see!
